What is the Arizona ESA?
The Empowerment Scholarship of Arizona (ESA) program is a great way for parents to provide their children with educational opportunities. The program allows families to receive up to 90 percent of the amount that would have been spent on public school tuition for their child and use it for education-related expenses, such as private school tuition, online courses, textbooks, tutoring services, and therapy services. The funds are deposited into an account and can be used at the parent's discretion in any combination of approved education-related expenses, aka ESA Purchases.
What is ESA Curriculum?
For some ESA Purchases, the ESA may request additional documentation explaining how an item is being used for educational purposes. This is the case with items that are categorized as “Supplemental Items Requiring Additional Documentation.”
When parents are requesting approval for these purchases to be covered with ESA Funds, they must provide supplemental documentation, including specific information (ex. materials list indicating required or supplemental materials). The most common documentation is a lesson plan or curriculum showing that the item is needed for an educational purpose. At ESAPlanner, we refer to this as ESA Curriculum.
